HOWE, Arthur (Art)
October 18, 1922 ~ February 21, 2017

On February 21, 2017 my Dad, Arthur (Art) went home to be with his Lord. Dad was born in Parleeville, New Brunswick to Robert and Isabelle Howe. He was the youngest of 7 children, the oldest being 19 years older than he was. Art is survived by his daughter Sharon Howe; sister-in-law Martha Doerksen and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his wife Luella; his parents and his sisters: Hazel, Edna, Grace, Lottie and Marjorie and his brother Robert.

Dad lived on the farm until he was 17 when he went to work in the coal mines, leaving there after two years to work on the railroad. In 1942, he joined the RCAF, becoming an aeroframe technician. He stayed in the service during the war, his only regret not being sent overseas. After the war he left the service. Prior to returning home he decided to see Canada. While visiting an old friend in Ottawa, he met Luella Howe from Alberta, who had been working for the Federal Government during the war. She was returning to Calgary soon, as the jobs in the Government were for the military coming back from the war. Dad was not sure what sort of response he would get in Alberta, but thought he would see, if it didn't work out he would go on to Vancouver. Mom and Dad were married in 1946. While in Calgary, they lived in the Devonish Apartments, where I was born in 1948, and where they stayed until 1951, when the Korean Conflict broke out and Dad re-enlisted. In 1953, Dad was involved in leap-frogging the aircraft to Baden Sollengen, Germany, where we were the first family that arrived there. Dad continued in the Air Force being stationed at Chatham, NB, Cold Lake, Alberta, and once again to Europe and then retiring in 1968. He then started a new phase working as a Product Inspector for Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada until 1986. He loved the job as he got to go shopping to check that people were following the trade mark rules etc. Dad always loved shopping and gadgets, the more different the better.

When Dad retired, his co-workers presented him with a chime clock engraved with “This clock does not run on pensionable time” because whenever he was asked to do something he would always answer sure “it’s all pensionable time”. Upon retirement he became a house husband, as Mom worked until 1990. They then became Arizona Snow Birds, buying a double-wide trailer and settling at Sun Lakes, Arizona. They only had two years together during retirement when Mom died. In 1992, Dad moved to Calgary and then to Regina where he lived with his former neighbour from Arizona, Patricia Thompson. In 2009, he returned to Calgary to live with me. Initially when he moved here, he enjoyed playing golf, curling and spending time with friends and family, as well as watching all kinds of sports, especially hockey, rooting for Edmonton and Calgary and his all time favourite the Detroit Red Wings, go Gordie Howe. His breathing started to deteriorate and he required oxygen 24 hours a day, so he switched to armchair activities such as watching every mystery show especially CSI. Some of our best times were sitting in the den watching mysteries. As his breathing became worse he started reading any kind of book especially mysteries. On Friday, he was admitted to the Peter Lougheed Hospital where he comfortably rested until Tuesday morning when he drew his last breath and peacefully went home to God.

A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home (1605 - 100 Street SE, Calgary) on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Art’s memory may be made directly to the Alberta Lung Association, PO Box 4500, Station South, Edmonton, AB T6E 6K2 (www.ab.lung.ca) or the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 (www.cancer.ca).

To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.
