Ted passed away peacefully in the morning of January 26, 2017 at the High River Hospital at the age of 90. Except for the last few months he had few health concerns and exercised regularly, keeping the arthritis pain at bay and allowing him to remain active. Through all of the ups and downs he was able to maintain his humour and wit, even when in the hospital.

Ted was born in Regina, SK, the eldest of two sons of Hugh and Bea Knowles. Following a youthful passion for the RCMP he joined the force and served 22 years. He had several postings throughout southern Alberta and lastly in Ottawa, where he retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. It was during an early posting in Banff that he met Bernyce Miller, who he married and enjoyed 44 years of marriage until her passing in 1996. Ted and Bernyce had two children, Alan, and Jimmy. Jimmy’s unfortunate passing after a car accident at the age of 15 was a profound loss for Ted and the family.

After retiring from the RCMP the family moved to Calgary where Ted enjoyed a varied and interesting career. Ted worked with the Devonian Group for many years where he was involved in several developments including overseeing the construction of Devonian Gardens. Ted took great pride in working with his hands, both in the garden and in his well appointed workshop. His later career moves provided a good fit with these skills and a special sense of pride for him. Following Devonian he joined Scouts Canada and had the opportunity to oversee the preparation of the sites for the very successful 1981 Canadian and 1983 World Jamborees held in Kananaskis Country. Ted finished his working career at Heritage Park where he managed maintenance and construction and was thus involved in many of the working operations of the Park. After full retirement he focused his skills on making scale models of many early Western Canadian settlers’ wagons and stage coaches, which was a great source of satisfaction to him.

After the passing of Bernyce, Ted married Doris Metcalfe and they moved to High River, AB, a quiet town where the pace was well suited for his hobbies and their lifestyle.

Ted is lovingly remembered by Doris; his son Alan; his two grandsons Jamie and Brendan, all of Calgary; sister-in-law Betty, nieces and nephews Sheila (Pino Florio), Robert (Dawn) and Janice (Mark Palmer); and Doris’ children Garth (Mary), Corinne (Marc Baur) and Leslie (Craig Fedorak). In addition to Bernyce and Jimmy, Ted was predeceased by his parents and his brother Alan.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial reception at Mountain View Funeral Home (1605 100 St SE, Calgary) on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Arthritis Society, #300, 1301-8 Street SW, Calgary, AB, T2R 1B7 (www.arthritis.ca).
To express condolences, please visit www.mountainviewmemorial.ca
