June 16, 1924 – Montreal, QC
October 14, 2016 – Calgary, AB
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Anderson, beloved husband of his “bride” Doreen. He passed away peacefully on October 14, 2016 at the Carewest Colonel Belcher Veterans Care facility at the age of 92 years.

Harold was the fourth child of George Donald and Mary Irene. He was born and raised in Montreal. Harold served in the RCAF from 1943-46. Prior to D-Day he was stationed in southern England. A few days after D-Day he crossed the channel with his RCAF unit which was involved in preparing and operating forward airfields in support of the allied invasion of Europe. The majority of his remaining deployment from late 1944 was at airfields near Eindhoven, Holland. In 1947, shortly after returning to Canada Harold met Doreen, the love of his life, and they married in 1948. In 1971, the family moved to Ottawa and in 1985, after retirement, Harold and Doreen relocated to Calgary to be closer to the younger grandchildren. Harold spent his entire 37 year career working with Northern Electric, in Montreal, Ottawa and Raleigh, NC, retiring in 1978.

Harold had a wonderful sense of humour that he was happy to share with all. Harold worked tirelessly at both St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church and Our Lady of M. Bistrica, Croatian Church. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels and St Vincent de Paul. Harold was a great bowler and dart player and up until 2 years ago, played golf every Tuesday morning through the Royal Canadian Legion. Harold’s life took on a special meaning when it came to his grandchildren – he attended many sporting events, plays and concerts in which his grandchildren participated. He always had time for them and relished their company as they did his! He was happiest sitting at the head of the table of a family gathering.

Harold is survived by his wife of 68+ years, Doreen (Carey), his two daughters, Teresa (Don Shepherd), Colleen (David Oberhofer), and son-in-law Clifford Walker. He was a wonderful grandfather to Lucas (fiancé Jacqueline Wilson) and Erin (deceased) Walker; Andrew (fiancé Caitlin Dickinson), Claire (Mike Woodward), Norah, and Meryl Oberhofer; and Emma and Mitchell Shepherd. He is also survived by his sister Beatrice and his brother Brendan (Theresa).

He was pre-deceased by his parents, brothers Patrick and Donald and by his daughter Heather and granddaughter Erin.

The family would like to thank the staff at Carewest Colonel Belcher Veterans Care facility for the wonderful care they provided for Harold over the past eleven months. A Funeral Mass will be held for Harold on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at noon at St. Bonaventure Church, 1600 Acadia Dr. SE with viewing one hour prior at the church with a reception following in the church hall.

If so desired, memorial donations in Harold’s name can be made to the Calgary Veteran’s Food Bank.
