“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

Henry Vanderberg, loving husband of Ellie Vanderberg, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on February 4, 2017, at 78 years of age.

Henry was born on August 21, 1938 in Harkema-Opeinde, Friesland, Netherlands. In 1953, he immigrated to Canada with his parents, settling on a farm near Carstairs, Alberta. At the age of seventeen, Henry began working for the CPR as a machinist apprentice in Calgary. He took great pride in his work and remained with the CPR for 39 years, retiring in 1995. Noon hours at the CPR were spent playing cribbage. While Henry never did get that elusive “29,” he came close with 28 many times. He could count the points in one’s hand quicker than the cards could be put on the table.

In 1957, Henry met Ellie de Klerk through the young people’s group at the church they both attended. They were married on January 16, 1959 and were blessed with four sons.

Henry had many interests and enjoyed participating in new and old hobbies, including cribbage, crosswords, square dancing, singing in the Calgary Protestant Male Choir and cruising around the world with Ellie. He had a special passion for gardening. Henry, together with Ellie, was instrumental in establishing the first Missions Thrift Store in Calgary and was a dedicated volunteer for many years.

Henry was a long-time member of River Park Christian Reformed Church and faithfully served his Lord and Saviour throughout his life. He was always willing to help others and live out Christ’s call to love his neighbours. His family is comforted by the knowledge that he can now rest in peace in the arms of Jesus.

Henry was thankful to God for the blessing of his family. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 58 years, Ellie; his sons - George (Christine), Richard (Kerri), Robert (Christine) and Michael (Flavia); his thirteen grandchildren - Brad (Kerri Lynn), Trevor (Chelsy), David (Claire), Lindsay (Jordan), Jessica (Dursa), Courtney (Jesse), Ashley, Nathaniel, Brooke, Alex, Ayden, Marissa and Alexis; and his six great-grandchildren, Damen, Kadence, Finn, Arya, Amina and Grayson.

Henry is predeceased by his parents Gosse and Taapke, infant great-grandson, Brandon Vanderberg, as well as Ellie’s parents, Dirk and Agnes de Klerk.

Henry worked hard to care for Ellie and his family. He was proud of his sons and their families and loved them dearly. He will be missed.

The memorial service is planned for February 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Derek Van Dalen officiating. A private, family interment will take place prior to the service at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
