With immense sadness Nathan’s family announces his sudden passing in Vancouver, BC. Nathan packed much living into his short life. He and his twin brother, Matthew, joyfully began their journey of learning and growth on August 6, 1987 in Calgary. There was no holding Nathan back; he fully seized and filled his life. He was mobile and frolicked while still in the womb. His keen and energetic mind filled his life as a youngster with adventure. As he matured his intellect, participation in sports and acting, writing and producing fed his curious and outgoing personality.

Nathan’s life journey took him from the homes, schoolyards and playgrounds of Calgary to summer vacations on many western Canadian lakes and rivers. He played on the shores of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River one summer with Matthew and his younger brothers, Nic and Neill; moved to Eagle River, Alaska, with his family for three years while in high school; and studied in Taiwan for a semester of university. Nate, as he was called by many close to him, was elected to successive terms as VP Internal on the University of Lethbridge Student Council and he recently experienced the wonders and cultures of Iceland, Europe, Great Britain and Ireland. His academic and intellectual travels included all scientific fields, philosophy, politics, English prose, drama and his favorite subject - economics. Before discovering his passion in acting and film production, Nathan dreamed of being the Governor of the Bank of Canada.

Nathan’s passions were learning, writing and acting. He was an avid reader, economics enthusiast and held a Bachelor of Commerce. His career in the film production industry was blossoming and he was embarking upon exciting new challenges and opportunities. He was living his dream. Nate was a genuine, sociable and engaging son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. His sharp wit and unique sense of humor entertained all. Whether performing sketch comedy skits or telling jokes and stories at the kitchen table, he made most of us laugh joyously and brought smiles and chuckles from everyone. He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and countless cousins and friends.

Nate was a “thinker.” This was evident from birth with his penetrating gaze and insatiable quest for knowledge and understanding throughout his life. Few unknowns were too obscure or problems too complex. He did his research, analyzed and evaluated in his head and arrived at answers that briefly satisfied his curiosity. He was a great teacher and readily shared knowledge and his discoveries. His love for mind bending card and board games was legendary. Nathan was creative. Many of his poems and creations are available at https://medium.com@natemccowan.

Nathan we love you and miss you desperately. Our fond memories of your inquisitive, happy, generous, active and thoughtful spirit will only partly fill your void. Images of your smiling face and crazy, fun-filled antics will forever break and warm our hearts.

In Nathan’s own words,

Self

I am me, this I know
Every day I change and grow
Though the process is steady and slow
I am me, I know

I am me, so I assume
Habits form and behaviours bloom
Though past has gone and future looms,
I am me, I assume

I am me, this I guess
I’ve been through different trials and tests
I’ve been my worst and my best
I am me, I guess

I am me, this is true
There’s an old version and a new
Despite all that I’ve been through
I am me, and you are you

Nathan's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral, (219 - 18 Avenue SW, Calgary) on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Greg Coupal, presiding. Cremation will follow.

Please visit Nathan's Memorial Website at www.mountainviewmemorial.ca
