VILLA, Virginia
June 24, 1948 - February 26, 2016

Virginia (Virgie) Villa (nee Tuliao) was born on June 24, 1948 in Cauayan, Isabella, Philippines to Artemio Tuliao Senior, a school principal, and Remedios Guerero Tuliao, a teacher. Virginia was the youngest member in a family of eight, and was close to her siblings Mercedez, Norma, Romulo, Artemio, and Rodolfo.

On November 19, 1969 Virginia obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of the East, in the city of Manila. While boarding with her cousin Rudolfo Albano and family in 1969, she met Melchor Sia Villa who was employed as security and driver to the family Albano. She was soon married to Melchor in 1971. On April 13, 1972, in a small house, she gave birth to her first child Rommel in Cabagan, Isabella.

For hopes of a better life, Melchor, Virginia, and son came to Calgary, Alberta, Canada on April 13, 1973. Their first home was a small place in the Community of Bridgeland. Virginia’s first job in Canada was as a Nursing Aide at George Boyak Nursing Home. Melchor and Virginia built their first house in 1975 in Marlborough Park NE. On April 6, 1979 she gave birth to her daughter Patty Rose Villa at Calgary’s General Hospital. Patty was later diagnosed with a rare illness.

In the early 1980s she started working in the banking industry, establishing her career in accounting and later managing business finances for Western Canada. She worked at Royal Trust, the Royal Bank, and ATB where she made many friends, and worked with some great colleagues. Over the years Virgie helped many of her relatives immigrate to Canada so they too would have an opportunity to a better life.

On April 13, 1990, Good Friday, she mourned the passing of her daughter who succumbed to her illness. Virginia’s love and devotion to Patty, allowed her daughter to live a good, and longer life than was expected. This defied the doctor’s prognosis that her daughter would not survive much more than a year after she was born.

As years passed, she was actively involved with the Filipino community, loved to ballroom dance, enjoyed the company of loved ones, and travel with her husband.

In 2010 Virginia was diagnosed with cancer. She went through treatment and a year later was considered to be in remission. She continued to travel, enjoyed life, spending her time with husband, friends, and activities with the Calgary Seniors Association. After a long and accomplished career in banking she finally retired from ATB at the age of 65.

On Friday, February 26, 2016, at 5:15 pm, due to problems related to the recurrence of cancer to which she fought long and hard, Virginia passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Center. From the day she was born, to her last day, she remained a positive, faithful, kind, strong and cheerful woman who unconditionally loved her family, friends and God.

To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.
